GM Wesley So started with a fighting draw against GM Kuzubov in the SPICE Cup 2009 opening. Employing white pieces, the young master from the Philippines used the 1.d4 opening and transposing it to a Catalan to battle it out with the talented Ukrainian. It was a hard struggle for both players as they seek the initiative where we saw Wesley So race against time trouble approaching the 40 move time control.
